Founded as a small Community-Based Organization offering adult literacy to Flatbush residents, the organization has grown over the past 15 years working with organizations, schools and other public institutions, to provide a broad array of comprehensive services and respond to the cultural needs of area residents. HELP has especially been a leader in addressing immigration, acculturation, legal, employment, literacy, family, and youth issues.
MISSION
BACKGROUND
HELP has been offering culturally sensitive programs to meet the needs of East Flatbush community residents for the past eleven years. It has especially been a leader in addressing education, immigration, acculturation, literacy, family, poverty, and youth issues.
Since its inception, HELP has assisted over 4,000 adults from many national origins- especially from diverse nations of the Caribbean- achieve social integration and reach self-reliance. It has especially helped them acquire spoken and written communication skills in English, obtain better employment, or advance toward higher education. More than 2,500 school-aged children have participated in our Youth Development Program, which provides them the guidance necessary to improve their academic and social skills in a safe and supportive environment while parents or guardians are at work, thus keeping them from engaging in street and delinquent activities. These services are delivered within a framework of safety, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity.
